The Coliform Vial detection system for Soleris® is a peptone yeast extract base with lactose as the carbon source. The selective agents include bile salts, sodium lauryl sulphate, and other Gram-positive inhibitors. Acidification of the medium due to lactose utilization changes the pH. Bromocresol purple (BCP) is used as the pH indicator. The BCP changes from a purple to a yellow colour as acid is produced from the coliforms’ metabolism.
The BP9 designated-vials are for products with a lower starting pH (e.g., yoghurt). These vials are designed with an increased buffering capacity to accommodate samples in the pH range of 4.6–6.0 without pH adjustment.

The Direct Coliform Vial (5 mL) for the Soleris® system is based on detection of carbon dioxide produced from the metabolism of the organisms. The vial consists of a detection chamber containing carbon dioxide indicators separated by a barrier layer from a chamber containing a growth medium and test sample. The Direct Coliform Vial has the ability to test for coliforms in 1 g of yoghurt.
